The RGLI Charitable Trust launches their next fundraising

The event at Government House for the launch of the project to raise money and restore 16 La Rue Verte, in  Masnieres was a packed audience of supporters, sponsors politicians and those involved with the RGLI.

His Excellency said a few words to introduce the RGLI Chair, Chris Oliver, who thanked everyone for the help so far received and those who had a shared interest in the project. He then went on to outline the plan for the restoration of the house and highlighted the story of those three days in 1917 when the defence of Le Rue Verte left 453 men killed, wounded or missing. A statistic that affected every family in Guernsey.

One of the men of the RGLI to survive the Great War was sharpshooter Private Charles Henry Machon, whose niece, Mrs Janet Van Zenten was able to attend the event at Government House and was surprised and overwhelmed to receive a memorial flag in commemoration of her favourite uncle.
