Re-opening of the Telegraph Tower in Alderney

A proposal to utilise the Telegraph Tower as a tourist attraction, celebrating the maritime History of the Island, has been put forward by Visit Alderney, building on the success of the Nunnery site and the Odeon and protecting the Heritage of the Island.

Built in 1809 as a signalling tower, Telegraph Tower was used to communicate with the other Channel Islands during the Napoleonic Wars using Mulgrave’s semaphore system enabling reports to be passed between stations in Guernsey, Sark and Alderney, communicating vital information on the movement of French shipping during the war.

Telegraph Tower stands as the only surviving, purpose-built location for this system in the Channel Islands.

His Excellency will officially open the refurbished tower and enjoy a tour from the President of the Euler Trust.

The pictures below show the tower in 1936 and again in 2021.
