La Houguette School Art Club Bunting Project
The Liberation 80 Bunting Project has captured the imagination of islanders with 200 groups currently making bunting to decorate the town for the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Guernsey from occupying forces in 1945.
La Houguette School Art Club has taken that opportunity to teach the children some basic sewing skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. The make do and mend ethos that existed for islanders throughout the occupation has been brought to life again with the recycling of old quilt covers and curtains being used for the celebration.
His Excellency was taught a few rudimentary skills with a sewing machine, which he had never used before, and nine year old Louis Jones helped him choose some fabric and get it ready to sew. He said he was very impressed with the Lieutenant-Governor's Pikachu bunting and thought he had done an excellent job on his first go.
The children's bunting will add to the thousands of metres that will be strung around the town for the celebrations and on into the summer months.
