Island Games 2023

Held in Guernsey from 8-14 July - His Excellency and Mrs Cripwell were living, eating and breathing the Games!

More than 2000 athletes from 24 island nations came together in Guernsey to take part in the 2023 Island Games and the Lieutenant-Governor and his wife totally immersed themselves in all the fun to be had.

Its a huge event for the Island and when the request for 1200 volunteers went up, His Excellency and Mrs Cripwell were quick to put their names down. His Excellency then spent every morning doing as his was told... mostly parking cars... whereas Mrs Cripwell was assigned to the merchandising team and thoroughly embraced the opportunity to talk to islanders and visitors alike as she sold hats, hoodies and puffins at events across the island.

When they were released from duty, they attended a variety of sporting events including the shooting, swimming, athletics, basketball and sailing and each were asked to award medals at ceremonies across the island.

They attended the opening and closing ceremonies and were amazed at such a huge turnout of islanders. The whole island seemed to be out in support of events all week and cheered every athlete taking part, even managing to forget their ancient friendly rivalry with Jersey as they chased each other for medals across so many sports.

The three crown dependencies came out on top with Guernsey topping the and maybe, more importantly the whole island came together to deliver and support a games to be proud of.
