Guernsey Voluntary Service

There were twenty recipients of Long Service Awards for the GVS that evening with a further eleven who had been unable to attend. There were seven Bronze (10 years), ten Silver (15 years), one Gold (20 years) and two platinum awards (30 years) presented. The range of duties undertaken by the volunteers include helping at Jubilee and Russels Social Clubs, transporting clients to and from the Social Clubs, fundraising at flag days and Blood Donor Calling alongside the very successful Meals on Wheels Scheme.

As patron of the GVS, Mrs Cripwell was delighted to be asked to present the awards for Long Service, however, she had to go rather suddenly off island for a funeral and His Excellency offered to take over her duties. Unfortunately, the Lieutenant-Governor had gone to Sark to attend Chief Pleas the day before and Storm Bert rather caught the island by surprise and he was forced to remain in Sark another night.

We were keen still to continue with the awards so we turned to the Bailiff's Office and the Deputy Bailiff, Jessica Roland was available and very pleased to be able to attend to give out the awards. She said in her speech that it gave her a chance to meet some of the wonderful volunteers who give of their time so freely to help with the activities of the GVS.

Both Mrs Cripwell and His Excellency were most grateful to Jessica for stepping in and sent their congratulations and heartfelt thanks to the volunteers of the GVS.
