A Date at Age Concern

His Excellency took a trip out to Port Soif to visit the centre that houses the thriving Age Concern Charity.

Age Concern Guernsey was founded in 1993 by a small group of people who were concerned about the welfare of elderly people in the Island. The charity opened centres in the Vale, St Martin and St Peter Port and later in St Peter's.

As membership grew it became apparent that some members had significant mobility problems and many relied on relatives to take them to the Centres. Using money raised through donations the charity purchased four minibuses and now regularly collect members from their homes and return them later.

The Charity is now run by a committee consisting of the four Centre Managers and a Transport Manager and overseen by five Directors.

It is a thriving charity with approximately 260 members who pay just £5 for membership and otherwise rely on donations and their enthusiastic bunch of volunteers.

His Excellency met with many of the members who were attending that day over a cup of tea and a biscuit and also met with the Chairman, Director and Centre Manager who showed him round and told them of the various initiatives they undertake.
